“Don’t let the small stuff get in the way of having the big things in life.”

I was 30 yrs old, had been dating a woman for about 6 months and pretty much knew she was the one, but hadn’t fully admitted it to anyone out loud.  One night during a phone call with my mom, she asked, “How are things going with you and Dilyn?”
I replied, “Things are going great…she’s a girl like no other.”

I was falling hard and was a little scared of how big it all felt. I remember my mom asking me. “What are you going to do?  Are you going to ask her to marry you?”

I hesitated and with out skipping a beat my mom said, “Do you love her?...Is she the one?”
“Yeah I think so…” I replied
“Then what are you waiting for?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is it the ring?” She asked.
“Yeah…maybe.”

I wasn’t in a place to afford what I thought should be an appropriate ring…whatever that means.
“So what if I removed that concern…now what?” she asked.
By removing the “small thing” (the ring) I was able to step into what has become a loving 14 year marriage. Thank you mom for helping to remove the “small thing” so as to embrace and experience the “big things” in life.

What to say about mom? I could go on and on for pages.  Mom…you are a friend and a teacher.  You are unconditional love and acceptance.  You are always there, always available, always ready to come to the rescue.  You are willing to grow and transform.  You are an extraordinary Mimi to my children who think you walk on water. I love you mom…to the moon and stars and back again.
